Georgia Toews

This is a robot my oldest son made. He generally doesn’t let me keep any of his artwork, he destroys it as soon as he’s showed it to me. It’s part of his process. But he let me keep this.

What do you feel is your best piece of work?

I always have to think that whatever I’ve created is the best work I could do at that time. I hope I never create my best piece, but just keep trying to reach that invisible goal.

What music have you been listening to lately?

Depends what I’m doing/my mood. I like whatever the genre is that mashes up EDM and hip hop for working out. When I go for walks it’s just pop/hip hop music usually. I used to be embarrassed by my musical taste, but now I’m a proud Belieber.

What’s in your fridge right now?

So much meat. And babybels, they were on sale. (I have a toddler.) So various meats and an alarming amount of wax-covered cheese discs.

Who is the last character you related to and why?

Kendall Roy. Kidding. Probably Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I honestly love magnets.

Have you ever failed at something you care about?

One time I believed I could be really good at hurdles. Then I made it to the provincial track and field meet and knocked down every single one and came in dead last.

What is the last gift you received?

Some sort of plant, with the promise I could just admire it and do nothing to care for it. I have no idea what it’s called, but it’s green and purple and so far it’s survived.

What is your favourite photo you’ve taken?

I’m terrible at taking photos! But any with both my kids with at least one looking at the camera. I have one of my oldest where I told him not to touch the BBQ, and the photo is the moment right after he did, in fact, touch the barbeque. He’s so thrilled with himself. That’s a good one.

Best Season?

Spring I think. I like seeing everyone collectively determined to enjoy being outside despite the fact that it’s still only plus 6. Makes me feel like we’re all moving towards something.

What is your least favourite household chore?

Cleaning bottles/nipples. My youngest is on formula and it is very sticky.

Best outfit you’ve ever worn? Where and why?

I had this beautiful light and dark purple lingerie-ish looking camisole and TRUE RELIGION (it’s in caps cause they were a big deal) bootcut faded jeans and it was the go to. I probably wore it every weekend to Ready Mix at the Zoo in Osborne Village. A very specific group of Winnipeggers will remember. Jeans and a cute top, it’s a classic for a reason.

Do you like to write in the morning or at night?

Morning for sure. After about 2 ½ coffees.

When did you first receive praise for your writing?

Grade…5? I won a mountain bike for a short story about a girl and a flying horse. “Cloud Runner.” I have no idea how to ride a bike.

What was your first rejection?

Ever?? In writing or in general?? Writing constantly. In general, in grade 3 I lost out to another kid named Georgia to be class president. My parents told me it was fine and that it was just a popularity contest….yeah, that one hurt.

Latest book you’ve read or favourite book ever?

Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc.
